Hormonal Imbalance

Hormonal Imbalance refers to when there is too much or too little of a particular hormone in the blood-stream. There are many integrative therapies that can aid in re-establishing and maintaining balanced hormone levels. Depending on the source of the hormonal imbalance, these integrative therapies may be a primary treatment option or may be complementary to biomedical or pharmaceutical intervention. Common hormonal imbalances we treat at Stepping Stone include disorders of the thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal glands; PCOS in women; prostate issues in men; perimenopause and menopause; and sex hormone imbalances. Different therapeutic modalities are like different languages that your body speaks – the key is to find the right language (or combination of languages) that your body will listen to. At Stepping Stone Acupuncture & Wellness, we offer many services that can benefit patients experiencing hormonal imbalance, either as stand-alone therapies or in combination with one another. When it comes to holistic medicine, we find that the whole is often greater than the sum of the parts.

Chinese Herbal Medicine:

Chinese Herbal Medicine is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and works on the same principles as acupuncture. Herbs are taken in a formula of 2-20 herbs working together to balance hormones, manage symptoms, and boost your body’s natural resources. Formulas are customized to your unique presentation of hormonal imbalance – your herbalist will consider your whole health history in their formula recommendations. Herbs are prescribed in pills, teas, tinctures, powders, or raw herbs to decoct at home. Conditions for which we typically recommend herbal medicine as part of treatment include hypothyroid, hyperthyroid, PCOS, adrenal insufficiency, low testosterone, estrogen dominance, perimenopause and menopause, problems with fertility, and prostate issues.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves the insertion of single-use, sterile, solid needles into specific acupuncture points on the body to reduce tension and pain, overcome disease, and rebalance the body. Your acupuncturist will work with you to fully understand your diagnosis and constellation of symptoms from a Chinese Medicine perspective, and your treatments will be tailored to your presentation. Additional Chinese Medicine methods such as cupping, gua sha manual therapy, and moxibustion heat therapy may be included in acupuncture sessions, when appropriate. Acupuncture can reduce many of the common symptoms or discomforts of hormonal imbalance and also aid in establishing healthier hormone levels in the body.

Abdominal Therapy

Abdominal Therapy is founded on the ancient Maya therapy of abdominal massage, including pelvic assessment, treatment, and correction. Through specialized external massage techniques, your Abdominal Therapist guides your organs, soft tissue, and skeletal structure back into their optimal position, allowing for improved flow of energy, blood, and lymph through the abdomen and pelvis. By helping create better alignment and positioning of the reproductive organs, and connecting the mind and the body, Abdominal Therapy can have a positive effect on hormonal balance in the body, particularly in relation to the reproductive and genitourinary organs and functions.

Health Coaching

A Health Coach is a supportive mentor and wellness guide, who can help you to identify nutritional and lifestyle changes that can improve your overall health and wellness, help to balance hormone levels, improve sleep and mood, and help you better manage the stress. Nutrition can be an essential component of managing any chronic hormonal imbalance, including thyroid issues, adrenal insufficiency, fertility, perimenopause and menopause, and sex hormone imbalances. Certain foods can exacerbate symptoms or weaknesses, while other foods can promote increased production of certain hormones in certain situations. A good, customized nutrition plan can also help deal with some of the symptoms or discomforts of your hormonal imbalance, and help you feel in control of your health once again.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a therapeutic treatment in which pressure is applied to particular points and regions of the foot to affect change in the whole body. Reflex points on the feet correspond to different organs and body systems, and by stimulating these points the practitioner can create positive change in a particular system and bring the body back into balance. Many different hormone-secreting glands are represented on different parts of the foot, and a trained reflexologist can identify points of tension, pain, and imbalance in the feet to promote better functioning of these glands throughout the body.

In addition to these services, we may also recommend herbal teas, diet and lifestyle modifications, and aromatherapy to further support you on your journey. We also have a large referral network and may refer out to other specialists as necessary.
